MEET ALICIA D. BROOKS
Growing up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, home of one of the world’s best military bases, Fort Bragg, I always understood the importance of service and commitment. After I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill for undergraduate and Law School, my husband and I moved to Charlotte to start our family. Since 1992 when we moved here, we have embraced and supported this community as our own. We moved to Matthews where our daughters were raised and attended public schools and where we created a village that has in turn embraced our children.
My commitment and service began as an Assistant Public Defender as I represented indigent citizens from across this county in Superior court. In 1997, I served as an Assistant District Attorney in Superior Court where I protected and defended the rights of victims of violent crimes. I later opened my law firm and I practiced law as a trial attorney in Superior Court defending clients charged with serious felony offenses. In 2014, I was elected to serve as a District Court Judge in Mecklenburg County. I presided in family court, criminal and civil court, and domestic violence court. I was also the presiding judge over two treatment courts, Mental Health and Recovery court. I currently serve as judge of probate under the authority of the Clerk of Superior Court. I preside over incompetency and guardianship procedures, as well as adoptions, foreclosures and estate matters.
My service and commitment go beyond the walls of the courthouse. I volunteer in my community at the local public school for truancy court. As a truancy court judge, I mentor young children and parents to prevent children from entering the criminal justice system and to promote their education. As a former District Court Judge, I understand the importance of the judiciary and that judges must be connected to the communities they serve. We cannot be servant leaders without knowing and understanding the needs of the people we serve. I am committed to using my skill and knowledge and experience to serve my community again. I am the candidate with the Superior experience and I humbly ask to be your choice for Superior Court Judge.
The Honorable Alicia D. Brooks
